Remove a photo's background with AI
Use AI to cut out your item and drop it onto a clean white, eBay-ready background, right in your browser.
DashVue’s image editor can cut your item out of its background and place it on a plain white background, the kind eBay buyers expect on a main listing photo. It runs entirely in your browser, and you can undo the result if you don’t like it.
What background removal does
The Background tool detects the main subject in your photo, separates it from whatever is behind it (a table, a carpet, a cluttered room), and replaces that background with clean white. This is the look eBay recommends for your primary listing photo: the item, clearly visible, with nothing distracting around it.
If the result isn’t right, use Undo to step back to your original photo and try again, or upload a different source image.
How to remove a background
- Open the image editor and load the photo you want to clean up.
- Select the Background tab.
- Apply background removal. The first time you use it in a session, DashVue downloads a small AI model to your browser, so this run may take a little longer than usual. After that it runs faster.
- Review the result against the original. Check the edges around the item, especially any fine detail like straps, laces, or thin edges.
- If you’re happy with it, keep the edited photo. If not, select Undo to return to the original and try a different photo or crop.
Cut-out quality varies by photo
Be honest with yourself about the result before you publish it. Background removal works best on a clear, well-lit main photo with good contrast between the item and its background. Busy backgrounds, reflective surfaces, or fine detail around the item’s edge can produce a rougher cut-out. The tool is designed mainly for your main listing photo, not for cleaning up every image in a gallery.
Getting a better result
A few habits make the AI’s job easier before it ever touches the image:
- Photograph the item against a background that contrasts with its colour and shape.
- Use even lighting so the tool can find a clean edge, rather than guessing through shadows.
- Fill the frame with the item so there’s less background for the tool to misjudge.
If a photo still doesn’t cut out cleanly, it’s often faster to reshoot it against a plainer background than to keep reapplying the tool.
Publishing the result
Background removal itself doesn’t publish anything. Once you’re happy with the edited photo, it becomes part of your listing draft as normal. Pushing that listing live (or updating photos on an existing live listing) still needs a Full Access eBay connection; a read-only connection can draft and preview but can’t publish.
