Shopify transaction fees vs Shopify Payments fees
A Shopify Payments fee is the cost of processing a card or another supported payment method. Shopify's third-party transaction fee is an extra percentage charged when an outside gateway processes the order. If Shopify Payments is your sole provider, Shopify normally does not add that second fee to payments it processes.
| Plan | UK online card | Amex / international | In person | Third-party provider |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | 2% + 25p | 3.1% + 25p | 1.7% | 2% |
| Grow | 1.7% + 25p | 2.7% + 25p | 1.6% | 1% |
| Advanced | 1.5% + 25p | 2.5% + 25p | 1.5% | 0.6% |
| Plus | From 1.3% + 25p | Most competitive | Most competitive | 0.2% |
The final column is Shopify's additional charge; the payment provider's own fee is extra. Klarna and local payment methods have separate published rates.
Does Shopify take a cut of every sale?
On a £100 Basic order through an outside gateway, Shopify adds £2 before that provider's own fee. In a mixed setup, Shopify Payments-processed transactions use the standard Shopify Payments rate plus 1.25%. Manual methods and POS are exempt; PayPal Express is also exempt while Shopify Payments is active, though PayPal may still charge.
Stores created from 12 May 2025 pay the plan's third-party transaction fee on amounts covered by store credit or gift cards. Sole-provider Plus stores are waived. See the calculation and exemptions.
How much does Shopify take from a £30 or £100 sale?
| Plan | £30 fee | £30 payout | £100 fee | £100 payout |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | £0.85 | £29.15 | £2.25 | £97.75 |
| Grow | £0.76 | £29.24 | £1.95 | £98.05 |
| Advanced | £0.70 | £29.30 | £1.75 | £98.25 |
Assumes Shopify Payments is the sole provider, a standard domestic online card and a GBP payout. Subscription, sales VAT, apps, fulfilment, refunds and product costs are excluded; payout is not profit.
Fee = order total × rate + 25p. On Basic, £30 × 2% + 25p = 85p.

Does Shopify charge VAT on its fees?
Do not add 20% to every advertised Shopify fee. Shopify lists prices before applicable tax, but UK merchants generally contract with its Irish entity, so reverse-charge VAT may apply. Shopify labels UK Shopify Payments fee tax as 0% reverse charge. Check each bill because apps and gateways may differ. Customer VAT is separate: UK registration is generally compulsory above £90,000 taxable turnover. Keep the records and check HMRC's guidance or ask an accountant if unsure.
How to reduce your fees
- Check the upfront commitment before choosing yearly billing.
- Compare the all-in gateway cost: provider charge plus Shopify fee, using your real payment mix.
- Audit apps, refunds and currency costs against the margin they help generate.
Where to find the exact charges you paid
- Open Settings → Billing for subscription, app, domain and Shopify transaction charges.
- Open Settings → Payments → View payouts for Shopify Payments processing deductions.
- Export bills and payout records, then reconcile them against each order and refund.
