eBay Motors Fees UK 2026: What It Costs to Sell a Car or Motorbike
What eBay charges to sell a car, motorbike or scooter in the UK in 2026: listing fees by format, the 1% final value fee and its limits, Classified Ads, reserves and upgrades, plus the business rate on parts. Checked against eBay's UK fee pages on 17 October 2026.

Selling a car or motorbike on eBay UK as a private seller costs £14.99 to list by auction or at a fixed price, plus a final value fee of 1% of the final price when it sells, with a £25 minimum and a £45 maximum: £39.99 to £59.99 in all. A Classified Ad costs a flat £19.99 with no final value fee. Business sellers pay £13.99 plus 0.9% (minimum £21.99, maximum £39.49), or £17.99 for a Classified Ad, all plus VAT.
Vehicles are the one category where UK private sellers still pay a final value fee. For every other fee, see our complete guide to eBay selling fees in the UK.

What changed in 2026
Vehicle fees haven't changed since March 2025. Parts and Classified Ads have:
- 12 February 2026: business parts fees went from a flat 8.9% to 9.5% on the first £750 and 3% above, and the per-order fee on orders over £10 rose from £0.30 to £0.40.
- 8 June 2026: free 30-day returns on eligible new parts (business sellers).
- During 2026: Classified Ads became vehicle-only.
Private seller fees for cars and motorbikes
Since 1 October 2024, UK private sellers have paid no final value fee in any category except Cars, Motorcycles & Vehicles. Vehicles follow eBay's Motors schedule, and it's one schedule for the whole category: a motorbike or scooter pays exactly what a car pays.
Two other private-seller rules work differently for vehicles:
- Your 300 free monthly listings can't be used.
- Buyers don't pay a Buyer Protection Fee.
Our eBay private seller fees guide covers what's still free. For a vehicle, the listing format sets the fees.
How the 1% final value fee works
The final value fee is 1% of the final price, but never less than £25 or more than £45. So the 1% only sets the fee between £2,500 and £4,500:
- Under £2,500: the £25 minimum. A £600 moped and a £2,400 car pay the same.
- £2,500 to £4,500: 1%, so £30 on a £3,000 car.
- Over £4,500: the £45 maximum, whether it sells for £5,000 or £50,000.
You only pay the final value fee if the vehicle sells. The £14.99 listing fee and any upgrades are charged either way.
Classified Ads: £19.99 and no final value fee
A Classified Ad is an advert, not an eBay sale. Buyers contact you, and you agree the price, arrange any viewing and take payment yourself, off eBay. That's why there's no final value fee.
At £19.99 it's £20.00 to £40.00 cheaper than an auction or fixed-price sale. An auction earns that extra when you want bidders competing to set the price.
Classified Ads are now vehicle-only. During 2026 eBay stopped new ones in Business, Office & Industrial, Property, and Holidays & Travel; existing ads end or stop renewing at their next renewal date.
One eBay help page still calls the format free for UK private sellers. That's out of date: a private vehicle Classified Ad costs £19.99.
Business seller fees for vehicles and parts
Buy vehicles or parts to sell on and you're a business seller under eBay's business seller policy; you can't list as a private seller.
Business fees are quoted before VAT. eBay adds 20%, which VAT-registered sellers can usually reclaim (check your eBay VAT invoice).
Vehicles: £13.99 to list plus 0.9%
The 0.9% only sets the fee between about £2,443 and £4,388. Below that you pay the £21.99 minimum, above it the £39.49 maximum. Upgrades cost the same as for private sellers, plus VAT.
So a sale costs £35.98 to £53.48 before VAT (£43.18 to £64.18 with it), and a Classified Ad £17.99 (£21.59). Can't reclaim the VAT? Then you pay more than a private seller at every price.
eBay's Motors fee page lists no per-order or regulatory operating fee for vehicles; check your first invoice if you're unsure.
VAT-registered motor dealers can also apply for an eBay Motors Pro account. eBay doesn't publish its pricing, so ask eBay for current terms before you compare.
Vehicle parts and accessories: 9.5% up to £750, then 3%
Parts and accessories don't use the Motors vehicle fees. They follow the normal rules for your account type.
Private sellers pay no final value fee on parts, as with any other non-vehicle item:
- 300 free listings a month, then 35p per listing.
- The buyer pays the Buyer Protection Fee.
- Posting to a buyer outside the UK adds a 3% international fee.
- Parts priced at £750 or less normally go through Simple Delivery, where the buyer pays for the label unless you offer free postage.
Business sellers have paid a banded fee since 12 February 2026: 9.5% on the first £750 of each item's total sale, postage included, and 3% above. Tyres, GPS & Sat Nav devices and Power Tools & Equipment pay 6.9% up to £750, then 3%.
| Total sale | Most parts (9.5%, then 3%) | Tyres, GPS & Sat Nav, Power Tools (6.9%, then 3%) |
|---|---|---|
| £40 | £4.34 | £3.30 |
| £120 | £12.22 | £9.10 |
| £600 | £59.50 | £43.90 |
| £1,200 | £89.35 | £69.85 |
Each figure includes the £0.40 per-order fee and the 0.35% regulatory fee for a one-item order. Can't reclaim VAT? Add 20%: £12.22 becomes £14.66.
Our free eBay fee calculator works out parts sales at both rates (it doesn't cover vehicles). Selling parts on Amazon as well? Our Amazon vs eBay fees comparison sets the two side by side.
Free returns on new parts (business sellers)
Since 8 June 2026, business sellers must offer free 30-day returns on new or "new other" parts over £10 sold by Buy It Now to UK buyers; the exclusions are below. eBay gives 50% off its return labels for buyer-remorse returns, but budget for return postage. Source: eBay Seller Centre.
Reserve price, upgrades, deposits and payment
A reserve on a vehicle costs a flat £9.99 (plus VAT for business sellers), charged whether or not the bidding reaches it. Outside Motors a reserve costs 4% of the reserve price, up to £150, so the vehicle rate is a bargain on anything valuable.
Happy to sell at your opening price? Start the auction there and skip the reserve. Other upgrades are also charged sale or no sale.
Deposits and payment
eBay's Motors fee page lists no fee for taking a deposit. With a Classified Ad you take payment yourself, off eBay.
For an auction or fixed-price listing, check the payment options eBay shows when you list, and spell out deposit, collection and payment terms in the description.
Don't release the vehicle early
Whatever the format, don't hand over the vehicle, the keys or the V5C logbook until the full payment has cleared in your account.
Worked examples: a car, a motorbike, a scooter and a part
Private-seller fees include VAT; business fees exclude it unless stated. No upgrades unless listed.
A £2,000 car sold by a private seller
Auction-style or fixed-price listing, no upgrades.
| Sale price | £2,000.00 |
| − Listing fee | −£14.99 |
| − Final value fee: 1% of £2,000 is £20.00, so the £25 minimum applies | −£25.00 |
| Total eBay fees | £39.99 |
| You keep | £1,960.01 |
Below £2,500 the £25 minimum applies, so this car costs the same to sell as a £500 one. As a £19.99 Classified Ad you'd keep £1,980.01.
A £5,000 motorbike sold at auction by a private seller
Auction-style listing with a reserve price and Gallery Plus. The bike sells for £5,000.
| Winning bid | £5,000.00 |
| − Listing fee | −£14.99 |
| − Reserve price fee | −£9.99 |
| − Gallery Plus | −£2.99 |
| − Final value fee: 1% of £5,000 is £50.00, capped at £45 | −£45.00 |
| Total eBay fees | £72.97 |
| You keep | £4,927.03 |
If the bidding stops below the reserve
| − Listing fee, reserve price fee and Gallery Plus (charged anyway) | −£27.97 |
| Final value fee (no sale) | £0.00 |
| Total eBay fees | £27.97 |
The reserve and Gallery Plus add £12.98, sale or no sale. A business seller would pay £66.46 before VAT (£79.75 with it).
A £500 scooter sold by a private seller
Listed in Cars, Motorcycles & Vehicles at a fixed price, no upgrades.
| Sale price | £500.00 |
| − Listing fee | −£14.99 |
| − Final value fee: 1% of £500 is £5.00, so the £25 minimum applies | −£25.00 |
| Total eBay fees (8.0% of the price) | £39.99 |
| You keep | £460.01 |
As a £19.99 Classified Ad the fee share halves to 4.0% and you'd keep £480.01.
A £120 part sold by a business seller
Fixed price with free postage, so the total sale is £120. The seller isn't VAT-registered, so VAT on eBay's fees is a real cost.
| Total sale | £120.00 |
| − Final value fee: 9.5% of £120 | −£11.40 |
| − Per-order fee (order over £10) | −£0.40 |
| − Regulatory operating fee: 0.35% of £120 | −£0.42 |
| − VAT on eBay fees: 20% of £12.22 | −£2.44 |
| Paid to you, before postage and the cost of the part | £105.34 |
That's £12.22 before VAT (about 10.2% of the sale) or £14.66 with it (about 12.2%). The same part sold privately costs the seller £0 in these fees; their buyer pays a £5.50 Buyer Protection Fee (£0.10 + 7% of the first £20 + 4% of the next £100).
Total vehicle fees at other prices
| Sale price | Private seller | Business (ex. VAT) | Business (inc. VAT) |
|---|---|---|---|
| £500 | £39.99 (8.0%) | £35.98 | £43.18 |
| £1,000 | £39.99 (4.0%) | £35.98 | £43.18 |
| £2,000 | £39.99 (2.0%) | £35.98 | £43.18 |
| £3,000 | £44.99 (1.5%) | £40.99 | £49.19 |
| £4,000 | £54.99 (1.4%) | £49.99 | £59.99 |
| £5,000 | £59.99 (1.2%) | £53.48 | £64.18 |
| £10,000 | £59.99 (0.6%) | £53.48 | £64.18 |
A Classified Ad costs £19.99 (private) or £17.99 before VAT (business) at any price. Upgrades are extra.
How to pay less to sell a vehicle on eBay
Three things the checklist doesn't spell out:
- Price realistically first time. The listing fee and any upgrades are charged whether or not the vehicle sells.
- Breaking cars for profit is business selling. You're probably trading in HMRC's eyes and a business seller in eBay's, so the 9.5% parts rate applies.
- Selling parts as a Top Rated Seller? You get 10% off the variable final value fee on Premium Service listings.

Isn't selling on eBay free for private sellers?
For most things, yes: since 1 October 2024 UK private sellers have paid no final value fee, except on Cars, Motorcycles & Vehicles, where the 300 free monthly listings can't be used either. Parts are still free to sell; our private seller fees guide explains the rest.
Does the buyer pay a Buyer Protection Fee on a car?
No. eBay doesn't charge its Buyer Protection Fee on Cars, Motorcycles & Vehicles listings or on Classified Ads. It does apply when someone buys a part from a UK private seller.
Do I pay eBay fees if my car doesn't sell?

Private sellers pay no final value fee on parts; the buyer pays the Buyer Protection Fee. Business sellers pay 9.5% of each item's total sale up to £750 and 3% above (6.9% to £750 for tyres, GPS & sat nav and power tools), plus a £0.30 or £0.40 per-order fee, the 0.35% regulatory fee and VAT. A £120 part costs a business seller £12.22 before VAT.
Do I pay tax when I sell my car on eBay?
Usually not, if it's your own car: HMRC's online selling guidance says you probably don't pay Income Tax on personal possessions, and there's no Capital Gains Tax on your car unless you've used it for business. Buying vehicles to sell for a profit is probably trading. eBay reports sellers to HMRC after 30 or more sales or more than €2,000 (about £1,700) in a year, which isn't the same as owing tax; see how much you can sell on eBay before paying tax.
